To be spiritually alive is to operate in life from your spirit, and to be spiritually dead is to operate by your senses or flesh. The reason why sin is damning to man is because every sinful act satisfies the desires of the flesh. You will notice, that in the Old Testament, when God was giving the laws, He made a way for one who kills another accidentally to go free; the cities of refuge. But there was no pardon for pre-meditated murder. The reason is because one was done to satisfy the flesh, but the other was not. Sin is deadly to man because it feeds the flesh, and whatever you feed, grows. As the scripture puts it, “…each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:14, 15 ESV).

Death means lifelessness, it is a metaphor for whatever does not have God in it, whatever does not have the nature of God, which is love. Now, let’s pay very careful attention to what I’m about to say. The scripture says this, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16 ESV). Yesterday we had a conversation about being converted to become as a little child. Now, the scripture above literally means that, ‘life’ comes when one who believes the truth, replaces what they have learnt from the natural senses with what the truth teaches. For example, when somebody wrongs you, the senses has taught us over the years to pay the person back or revenge, but truth says forgive, that is the way of love, and if we believe that truth, and replace revenge with forgiveness, life is what happens. Righteousness is not necessarily the act, it is the decision to do the act, which is based on the truth. The act itself is life.

In the same way, the sinful acts people do, is not what scripture calls sin, it is the decision they make in their heart to perform the act, based on what their senses tell them, that is what scripture calls sin,”…desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” (James 1:14, 15 ESV). The act itself is death. This is why Jesus came telling us that a person who lusts after a woman in their heart, has already sinned. This does not mean that the temptation, which is the desire to sin, is sin in itself, it is the decision to satisfy that desire that is sin.

In Part 27 of this conversation we ended by saying that the planting of the seed of righteousness, or the conception of God’s will in the human spirit en route to becoming reality upon the earth, happens when we take four definite steps inspired by an initiating first action by God. God initiates a reality He wants upon the earth when we HEAR HIS WORD about it, then we BELEIVE it by faith, and SPEAK it out upon the earth, ACT upon that word, the initial action being thanksgiving to God, and then we complete the cycle by REJOICING before The Lord.

Ok, let’s go back to our previous discussion of the four situations the word of God faces in the hearts of men. We are on the second, the rocky situation.

Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture. But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away. (Luke 8:6, 13 NKJV).

Now, unlike the wayside situation, the people here did trap the word with faith at least, but they may or may not have followed through the whole steps of spiritual conception, this is where spiritual abortions begin. The medical profession has it on record that most, about 75% of all miscarriages happen within the first trimester. This is the period closest to conception. The period closest to the point at which the word fertilizes our faith to produce the embryo form of righteousness or reality is the most vulnerable for that righteous seed in us.

This is the point at which ‘Natural Selection’ begins. But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. (Matthew 13:20, 21 NKJV). Notice that the scripture says that the tribulation and persecution(trials and testing) will come “because of the word”! I’ll leave you to meditate on that for now, tomorrow we’ll trace the ‘Natural Selection’ thing through the scriptures.

At this point, it is imperative we discus a very fundamental issue, the beginning of spiritual abortions in people’s life. There are five pillars upon which reality stand, knowledge, faith, words, actions and feelings. Every stage in the manifestation of any reality is carried by these pillars, it’s a cycle.

Let’s remember that everything we see today were created according to God’s will, and remained so until the darkness entered. So, God has a blue print(the light of life) for the whole of existence. When the word of God is preached, God is simply showing us His blue print for whatever situation the word is talking about. God is simply telling us the truth about our circumstance, the light of life is entering into us through His word.

Now, ordinary flesh cannot trap these words because they are spirit and life. Just in the same way that only the egg of a woman can trap the sperm of a man, only faith in the womb of the human heart can trap the light of life. The Holy Ghost makes this happen, just in the same way He made it happen during creation, brooding upon the waters while God spoke.

When God sends His word to accomplish a thing, that word is on a journey, it’s never meant to stay in one place. It’s meant to keep moving till it accomplishes what it was sent to do. This is the first mistake many make, when they trap the word of God, they don’t release it to continue its journey. When Jesus said that out of our bellies shall flow streams of living water He wasn’t talking about the Holy Ghost per se, He was talking about the same thing He meant when He said the words that I speak to you are spirit and life.

In order to maintain the cycle of the manifestation of the word of God when it becomes righteousness in our hearts, when we have believed it, we must SPEAK IT. If we fail to make that confession, we keep the light locked inside us, and once we do that, it decays into letter(knowledge without spirit). Only the spirit, which is the spoken word can make it to the next stage of the cycle, not the one that decays into head knowledge. The flesh profits nothing, the spirit gives life. With the heart we believe unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. We will take this further tomorrow.

But he who received the seed on stony places, this is he who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. (Matthew 13:20, 21 NKJV)

Jesus describes the second state of heart as a stony place. Notice a few things about this situation; 1) they hear the word and they receive it with joy, 2) they have no root.

First of all, these people are attentive to the word of God, they listen to hear the will of God. The seed of righteousness is sown successfully into their heart. The Spirit also effectively awaken faith in them to believe this word, and thereby have the embryo of righteousness, the earliest and most tender form of divine reality formed in their heart.

“This is where a sinner is when they first hear the gospel and are convicted in their hearts, this is where a believer is when they hear the word of God preached about a certain issue in their life and that “I can” feeling, or that “it is possible” feeling glows in their hearts. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about, we’ve all been there and we continue to experience it every time the will of God meets faith in our heart.” They are filled with joy.

Secondly, which is the sad thing about this state of heart, they have no root. Like a human foetus that die before fetal viability(stage of potential independent survival), the righteousness formed in this heart never makes it beyond the embryo stage. They are naturally aborted. So, the sick person who just now was full of joyful faith, that he is healed, steps out and feels a familiar pain, and because of that he begins to doubt and gives up believing, then he loses his pregnancy of a healed reality.

We’ll dig more out of this tomorrow. But for now, as I always want to leave you joyful, always at the entrance point of life, never at the door of death, I pray, the grace of God shall increase towards you, that you shall keep your pregnancies and deliver the divine reality planted in you.

In the past few conversations we’ve been searching out how to make sure that the seed of righteousness germinates to become righteousness in our hearts when it is sown. We saw that if one does not die to oneself, and give up ones own will first before the will of God is made known, that ones heart will throw the will of God aside and the enemy will steal it from ones life. This means that the will of God for that particular issue in that persons life will not manifest.

Thus says the Lord : “Cursed is the man who trusts in man And makes flesh his strength, Whose heart departs from the Lord. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, And shall not see when good comes, But shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, In a salt land which is not inhabited. (Jeremiah 17:5, 6 NKJV)

What this scripture is saying is that when people depend on that which is human, be it of themselves or of other people and not on God, they sufficiently equip themselves to fail and remain unsatisfied in life, to the extent that they cannot recognise what is best for them even when it is starring them in the face. They just can’t see the treasures contained in the will of God for them when it is shown to them.

Listening to self is the first thing that stops you even before you begin to get divine results on the earth. This is the problem with those whose heart is like the wayside. They are alive to self, and dead to the will of God. The will of God, the very raw material that will produce the fulfilling reality for them is considered worthless by their hearts because they still listen to their own heart. And then the enemy comes immediately and steals it away, and the birth of that reality never begins, because it was never conceived.

Do you want your life to be characterised by exploits? Then give up trying to live up to people’s expectations, give up your petty ideas and plans, dump your little mind and recognise the superior quality of the will of God at work in the universe.

God gave Abraham a promise, He will make him a father of many nations. As far as Abrahams life was concerned that promise is the will of God for him. That was righteousness because Abraham believed it. Abraham tried to scheme his way to the promise, because time was just not on his side anymore, which is exactly the reason we continue to make the same mistake today, we are impatient, and we want to prove a point to “them” and silence “them”.

Most people make the mistake of trying to bring the will of God to pass on their own. They depend on other means to arrive at the manifestation of the promise rather than God’s direction. Remember the wise men that travelled to see baby Jesus, which is like coming from where you are to the manifestation of God’s will. They saw the star from afar, which is a type of the knowledge of God’s will. And all along the journey, their eyes were fixed on the will of God every step of the way: they had gold, frankincense and myrrh, which are types of righteousness, peace and joy.

Abraham did everything right, except following God’s direction. He married a wife, slept with her legally and the woman gave birth to a boy. Sometimes we are deceived to think that because we did something right, that we will get the same result as following the will of God. No! Ishmael was naturally, legally, biologically and rightfully Abrahams first born son, but righteously he was not. And God rejected him. Because righteousness is more than being right, it’s being in agreement with God every step of the way.

In all reality, both spiritual and physical, you cannot be more correct than the will of God. No matter how right your actions, or how evil-less your strategies, what you will achieve by them can never be better than what you achieve by following the will of God step by step. Ishmael will never be better than Isaac. Don’t misunderstand me, you can always produce results on your own, people are doing that everyday, but what kind of result do you want? Ones born of things that you can explain in your mind, that bring you displeasure, pain and sorrow, or ones born by following God’s will blindly, which bring joy and pleasures forever?

Those who wait on God’s will are always much better off than those who rush to their own victory. It is better to travel with speed through life than to travel in haste. In the will of God, ten years can be reduced to one day.

Yesterday we began to explore the first of the four situations that the word of God come to when it is spoken into the heart of a person. The scripture tells us that this first situation is when the word of God, which is the seed of righteousness falls on a heart described by the scripture to be in a state that can be likened to a wayside. It says when this happens the enemy immediately comes and takes away the seed before it germinates.

We did establish that this kind of heart referred to here by scripture is a heart that is busy and occupied with something, something with a very strong hold on the person’s thoughts, the kind of hold that doesn’t allow that person’s thoughts to focus on any other suggestions. This was the kind of thing that held on to Moses’ heart till God broke it at the burning bush, and Saul’s heart until God broke it at the encounter on the way to Damascus.

This practically makes the word of God spoken to such heart to be considered unimportant and therefore thrown aside by the hearer, just like a traveller throws useless material to the wayside. Once this happens, because the person’s heart didn’t grab the word and make use of it, the person forgets it. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. (James 1:23, 24 NKJV)

If you are faced with an issue in your life, and you’ve chosen a particular course of action with respect to that issue, a course of action that has made it almost impossible for you to consider what God thinks about the issue, then your heart is in a state that can be compared to a wayside. From the depths of my heart I beg you, please STOP! Stop and hear what God is saying to you about that issue, because He loves you enough to STOP you with a painful chastisement.
