Let us look a little more closely at the ancestors of Israel, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We want to understand exactly where the tipping point in their walk with God was, and see that it was the absence of that tipping point that made the difference in the life of the generation that left Egypt. It was that tipping point that Pharaoh went after, it was that tipping point that the serpent went after at Eden, and it is that tipping point that the devil goes after in our lives today.

At the garden of Eden, the result of the successful removal of this tipping point was portrayed as eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, in our present dispensation of the New Testament it is literally revealed as double-mindedness; the ungodly presumption that supposes to know, and act with certainty that there are two possible, equal but opposite outcomes for every action.

The garden that God planted was supposed to take care of Adam and Eve, it provided everything they needed, with minimal work on their part. It was as if the whole process of productivity was on auto-pilot and they just needed to monitor and attend to it with the assurance of one end point; expected results. Once they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they were driven out of Eden to put in much labour and get little or nothing with much sorrow. James captures it for us very clearly; “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.” (James 1:6-8 ESV)

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (James 1:16, 17 ESV) Once there is double mindedness in a person, that person has left God. And from that point on, that person will begin to experience great difficulty and confusion of mind in whatever they’re doing. I always say that the scriptures is not a book for building religious organisations, it is the book of life. It teaches the creations of God how to live in the world He made for them. We will continue tomorrow.
