When a person is under the control of the senses, where expectations are set in agreement with what is naturally, ‘practically’ and culturally acceptable, the person is spiritually dead, which means that, the person is ‘separated’ from perceiving, knowing or understanding life beyond the physical. Things beyond the physical sound ‘Greek’ to people like that. These are they, of which the scriptures talk about, when it says “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” (John 4:48 NKJV)
In our last conversation, we were talking about the fact that, ‘The Spirit of God upon a person’ manifests as visible manifestations of the character and acts of God, which is what we refer to as miracles, sings and wonders. Paul calls it “the demonstration of the Spirit and power.”
Let us try, from a human point of view, and understand what Jesus means when He says that unless you people see sings and wonders, you will not believe. Imagine an engineer who has been building houses out of bricks and wood all his professional career life, building homes to withstand wind and water. Now, imagine trying to convince the same engineer to build a house out of ice. That engineer will look at you and think to himself, “you must be joking, Build houses out of water?!”
As far as he is concerned, judging by his years of experience, houses are built with bricks or wood, and that’s it. He is blinded to the possibility of houses made out of ice by what he is used to.
The way to break that limitation in his mind, is to take him to Sweden to experience one of the hotels built out of ice. When he encounters that, his mind will be stunned, and what you had told him earlier will suddenly become real enough for him to believe. This is what it looks like to be made to believe through signs and wonders. New possibilities are unlocked by new experiences. As we continue this conversation, we will also see this same principle at work in spiritual things, in salvation particularly.
