A wonder is usually an extraordinary event that causes surprise or astonishment. It has the essence of the ‘unexpected’, which tends to overpower ones senses and mind, leaving one momentarily dazed. In that short period, ones senses and mind are temporarily stunned and disarmed, leaving the person vulnerable to new ideas and thoughts. During this window, a man’s heart is open to receive the ‘lordship’ of whatever new knowledge is responsible for the wonder.
Earlier on, we talked about how information gathered by the senses and processed in the mind, which when it has produced results in ones life, gains control of ones life. We also talked about the fact that walking this way, in agreement with sense knowledge, is what the bible refers to as walking in darkness. That people who walk by the senses, or in other words, people who are carnal, are enemies of God, because the senses cannot accept what it cannot physically perceive. So, by default, the natural man walking by the senses opposes God whose ways are not readily perceived by the senses.
When the truth of God’s word is preached, the sense knowledge person weighs what is said against sense knowledge and the effects that are familiar with it, and that person’s heart is blocked and made inaccessible by the knowledge of the senses sitting as ‘lord’ in the person’s mind. This darkness blinds the mind, and forms a covering cast over the heart of the person, which is also referred to as ‘the veil’. Until this veil is torn away, until that covering over the heart is removed, the seed of God’s word cannot be sown in the heart of a person, that person’s heart remains inaccessible. Mere words alone cannot reach beyond that veil, nor can it break through that covering, it takes the power of God.
It is the demonstration of the power of God, through signs and wonders and all kinds of miracles that stun the senses and bind the strong man of the mind, tearing the veil of ignorance for the word of God to gain access into the heart. We shall talk more on this tomorrow, for now, I leave you with these words from Christ.
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (1 Corinthians 2:1-5 ESV)
And God was doing extraordinary miracles by the hands of Paul, so that even handkerchiefs or aprons that had touched his skin were carried away to the sick, and their diseases left them and the evil spirits came out of them. And this became known to all the residents of Ephesus, both Jews and Greeks. And fear fell upon them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was extolled. So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily. (Acts 19:11, 12, 17, 20 ESV)
