Words alone do not get people born again, it takes the power of God to cause that first tear in that veil that separates the spirit of man from the rest of his mind. The scriptures make this very clear to us,

And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. (I Corinthians 2:1-5 NKJV)

Once a mindset is formed through the cycle of knowledge, belief and productive action, it becomes as a blacksmiths mould, whatever you put into it assumes it’s present shape and features. The only way to change it, is to break it and remould it. We are going to get deeper into this and explain certain things that will make all this clear to us, but at this point, I want to mention that, without ‘signs’ and ‘wonders’, the ‘veil’ of ignorance, strengthened by the inability of the senses to see beyond what can be seen and measured, will keep the heart from seeing the truth in what is preached. These ‘signs’ and ‘wonders’ ought to be present, as a way of life in the believer. To be a ‘witness’ is not just to ‘talk’, it means to provide ‘evidence’.

It is not what you know and can talk about that testify of Jesus, it is the results of what you know. The salvation of people do not rest on words, it rests on Christ, which is the “manifest word.” We need to realise that there are two kinds of people, the ‘living’ and the ‘dead.’ Of the later, Jesus says, unless they see signs and wonders, they will not believe. People don’t just open up their hearts to mere talk, or to recitation of scriptures, hearts, like farmlands that have laid uncultivated over time, are broken up by the power of signs and wonders, and made ready for the planting of the seed of righteousness.

The power of knowledge within the heart is its effect. Scripture teaches that by the testimony of ‘two witnesses’ shall a matter be established. When you preach, you have presented a matter, but most times, that is all that there is, the ‘two witnesses’ are most times missing from the picture, and so it appears as though the word of God does not have the power to save sinners anymore.
