Nothing we do in Christ is really difficult or unbearable. When Jesus said His yoke is easy and His burden light, He really meant it. That is not a statement of “faith”, it is a statement of “fact”.
One very often dreaded aspect of our walk with God is hearing from God, or knowing the will of God. People get terrified when they hear it, and most wonder when they’ll ever be able to start hearing God speak to them, and become privy to His will. A lot of people think the idea of hearing God or knowing His will is not real because they’ve tried and failed.
Many also believe that all you need to do to hear God is to read the scriptures, that knowing the scriptures is hearing God and knowing His will. This is not entirely true. Please follow me patiently and carefully on this.
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. (John 5:39, 40 NKJV).
It takes more than knowing a verse from scripture to hear and know the will of God for your life personally, and for the particular situation you’re facing. Yes, God will speak or confirm His word through the scriptures, but He has to be the one giving you the scripture, not you picking one at random, or because it supports what you want to do. God is not your supporters club, He is your coach.
For example, the first time Moses brought water from the rock, God said “hit the rock”. Second time God said, “speak to the rock”. But Moses hit the rock again the second time, instead of speaking to it, and that cost him the promised land. Now, it was not his anger that God punished, it was his disobedience. Moses had been angry many times before, on one occasion he even broke the tablets of the Ten Commandments that God Himself carved. This was not about anger, it was about disobedience. So, Moses disobeyed God eventhough he still did it the way God once commanded that it be done.
If you say, well, he was punished because he knows clearly what God wanted him to do and still didn’t do it. Ok, you’re right, but we’re both right, because of this scripture,…
And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few…. (Luke 12:47, 48 NKJV)
Even if God did not tell Moses to speak to the rock this time, it was his responsibility to find out what God wants him to do. The word of God may have more than one solution for a situation you’re facing, you need more than just a knowledge of scripture to know which of them He wants you to apply. You need to know His will for you in that particular situation.
Another example; imagine there are two very genuine believers who do not know themselves personally, they each have no idea that the other is a Christian, and they are pursuing the very same contract. They pray, fast, “sow seeds” and all that in other to win the contract. Eventually, one of them wins the contract. What do you think happened? Do you think God set up a competition to see who will win? Or maybe it’s true that life is actually survival of the fittest? Or maybe one person is less loved by God? Or yet again maybe one person’s “seed(offering)” was greater than the other?
As per competition, God hates it. As per survival of the fittest, all that we have we received by grace. As per being less loved, the idea is strange to scripture. As per giving more money, that’s not what makes the difference, remember the widows mite? So, could it have anything to do with the will of God for the two people concerned? Perhaps!
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. (James 4:3 NKJV)
You see, the thing that keep people from hearing God and knowing His will is selfishness. It is impossible to hear God or know His will when we are primarily concerned with our safety, our well-being, our success, our benefit, our etc in what we’re seeking God’s face for.
Jesus came that we may have life and have it more abundantly. That means He came to give us the best life that we can ever think of. However, this life is not what you think, it’s not what you want, it’s what God has planned for you. It’s about everything, who you marry, where you live, what you do, what you study in school, where you work, who your friend is, what you say, how you handle that situation, which airline you’ll fly today, etc. So, when you hold unto your own plans and ideas about any of these things, God will back off. No matter how hard you pray, He will only answer you by making you realise you must give up your ground first.
He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. (Matthew 10:39 NKJV)
Yes! That is true,…the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever….” (Genesis 6:3 NKJV). If you read Genesis 32:24-29, the story of Jacob and the Man that was not named, you will see this very clearly. Jacob was wrestling with Him till morning. As morning came, the Man realising He was getting nowhere with Jacob decided to leave. Now while Jacob was fighting Him, Jacob’s hips was dislocated. Before God could bless Jacob, Jacob had to first surrender to God. The first thing God did to Jacob was get him to accept a name for himself according to God’s will. God needed Jacob to accept His own terms.
What is the implication of this to hearing and knowing God’s will? As long as you hold unto your own ground about something, you will be incapacitated from knowing God’s will about it. The presence of “Self” is the closed heaven above every attempt or prayer to know God’s will. The reason God said Jacob prevailed is because Jacob surrendered and set aside his own struggle for self-preservation.
He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it. (Matthew 10:37-39 NKJV)
Jesus emphasised on this when He talked about the light of life, saying that whoever follows Him will never walk in darkness, but have the light of life. According to Isaiah, we can arise and shine when the light has risen upon us, which means we can begin to enjoy this awesome life Jesus came to bring us when we know what Jesus, the sun of righteousness wants us to do at every particular point in time, when we begin to “see” in life with His light. Just like C. S. Lewis once said,…
I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.
All through scripture God keeps hitting on the point that we must die in order to be able to follow Him accordingly. He keeps talking about us denying ourselves, about being crucified with Christ. He tells us that the carnal man, which is the man that lives in self-preservation is in enmity with God, and therefore cannot please God. Just like Jacob, sometimes the reason why the word of God takes time to work in our lives is because God is waiting for us to die to ourselves and step into His will. Even our prayers.
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28 NKJV). When we quote this scripture, what most of us really say is different from what the scripture says. Most of us say “everything will work to make sure that what I want happens”. Wrong! That scripture is actually saying this, “everything in the universe is working to make sure that God’s purpose or will happens just as He wants it, and if my purpose and will is the same with God’s own, then everything in the universe is working to make sure that what I want happens.” Do you get that? It’s not about you, it’s about God.
Not realising this, is the reason why many people struggle with each other, compete with each other, fight over things. When I was given the grace to understand this, I put it to work and saw it working like magic, then I knew that doing things, going for things just because I want them and can find a scripture to back myself up is the same thing as walking in my own will, my dears, such doesn’t benefit you, it robs you of the abundant life you can have in Christ.
The reason God created man is to be an extension of Himself on earth. That’s why He made them in His image and likeness. They were not thinking or living for themselves but for God. Then came the serpent, and corrupted them with selfishness. The serpent deceived them into wanting to think for themselves. Do you see that the fundamental nature of the fall of man, the essence of the corruption in man is self. It will tell you how much God hates free thinkers, and those who “think for themselves”. This is the reason for all the wars and all the contentions in the world today, selfishness; self-centred life; misguided and corrupted self-preservation.
You will step into your “God-self” when you stop living for “your-self”. That is why He calls David a man after His own heart. David never fought for anything but the will of God. He left the country for Saul and ran away, he left the throne for Absolom and ran away, he was abused by Shimei and he didn’t react. When he fought Goliath, it was because he was defending the glory of God. Fighting, proving your point, asserting yourself doesn’t make you a man, it doesn’t make you strong, it doesn’t make you a contemporary woman, it robs you of the abundance, peace and fulfilment that comes from following God’s will.
Our struggle in prayer simply comes from the fact that we go to God in prayer with a preconceived expectation. In seeking God’s face we do not struggle to get God to speak, we struggle against our own self-will. Once we overcome ourself, we will hear from God and know His will. That was Jacobs fight, thank God he overcame.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows except him who receives it. ” ’ (Revelation 2:17 NKJV).
Divine help(manna) and your true identity, which is what will unlock your God-self in life and in that situation before you will be revealed to you when you die to yourself.
Don’t go to get God to do what you want, and to do it the way you want. Go to God to know what He wants to do and how He wants to do it. Don’t go to God to get Him to take you where you want to go, when you want to go, go to God to find out if He wants you to go, where He wants you to go, when He wants you to go. My dears, hearing God is the simplest thing on earth, it’s like hearing yourself speak. Knowing God’s will is the easiest information to have access to, it’s like knowing what’s in your mind. The attitude that unlocks the heavens and let’s through the voice of God to you is the attitude of Moses and the boy Samuel; “Lord speak, for your servant is listening.”
Oh God open their eyes to see, enlarge their hearts to understand that in that brief statement is contained the secret of life, that we are servants of God in every place and situation we find ourselves, that we must be as a little child before God, knowing nothing, that we must ask of Him and listen, then we will hear, and know what God wants to do, how He wants to engage our services, and when we go and act on that which we have heard, we become gods, incarnations of the Almighty.
Hearing God, knowing His will is the only way to live in peace and abundance. When you know God’s will about anything, you will not be perturbed even when things seem to be going the opposite direction, you will know that all things work together for your good, once you maintain your stand in His will. You will hold your peace, and God will fight for you. People will taunt you and say, “does working in faith mean you shouldn’t do anything, you should just fold your hands and watch?” Yes! That’s exactly what it means. Stand aside, put your small mind away, do nothing except what He tells you to do. Unless you do that, the water will not turn to wine. Deny yourself, ask Him to speak to you, hear Him, then say only what he tells you, do only what he tells you.
YOU ARE CHRIST.
