The things that most people consider as blessings are not really blessings. That you got a new car, or that you won a contract, and such things as these do not in themselves pass as blessings. Every real blessing comes with a responsibility. Most people know this but they put it upside down. The responsibilities are not “what you do to get the blessing”, they are “what you have been commissioned by the blessing to do.” Divine blessings are resource packs, supplies for missions of divine interest, just like evil blessings empower agents of darkness.

I am reminded of the powerful truth that Peter Parker’s(Spider Man) uncle communicated to him just after he(Spider Man) was blessed by the venom of the spider, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Whatever you think is a blessing in your life that is in no way contributing to make this planet a better place, or do some good somewhere for some people besides yourself, believe me, it is not a blessing. I don’t know what it is but I am definitely sure it is not a blessing.

Some preachers peddle a dangerous idea about the blessings of God. They talk about “sowing seeds to attract the blessings of God”, let me tell you my dear brothers and sisters, there is no such thing. The seed(whether financial resources, or the more weightier kind of seeds which are talents, natural gifts, special endowments and things like that) does not attract the blessings of God. The seeds are the blessings of God. They have been given to us to do good with.

Here is something to remember. The one who plants only a little will gather only a little. And the one who plants a lot will gather a lot. You should each give what you have decided in your heart to give. You shouldn’t give if you don’t want to. You shouldn’t give because you are forced to. God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to shower all kinds of blessings on you. In all things and at all times you will have everything you need. You will do more and more good works. It is written, “They have spread their gifts around to poor people. Their good works continue forever.” God supplies seed to the planter. He supplies bread for food. God will also supply and increase the amount of your seed. He will increase the results of your good works. …2 Corinthians 9:6-10 NIrV

We are blessed to do good works, not the other way round. You know a blessed man by the good he does. Jesus was blessed(anointed by the Spirit) and He went about doing good. Mother Theresa was blessed, she went about doing good. That poor lonely widow living near you will be visited by a blessed man the day you pay her a surprise visit and put food on her table and smiles on her face.

Are you really blessed? Remember, with great power comes great responsibility. And I will correctly add, with advantage comes responsibility. I ask you again, are you really blessed?
