A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; (I Timothy 3:2 NKJV)

Leaders must be vigilant(circumspect), discreet, cautious and judicious. They don’t take the effect and consequences of their choices and actions for granted. They are careful about their ways, bearing in mind always that the most important thing to them as leaders is how they are perceived by others and not just whether their own conscience is satisfied. They understand and appreciate the fact that those looking up to them are really looking up to them, that they communicate expectations to their followers not only by speech but also by the obvious and subconscious suggestions transmitted by their choices and actions in life.

People mostly do what they see more than they do what they hear. So, leaders should be careful how they come across to their people, and put in all the effort necessary for creating the right perception in people. They don’t just point the way, they model the life. They are not careless about their lifestyle. For them it’s a powerful tool that must be handled with utmost care. A leaders life is his greatest leadership tool, not his degrees, or his theological qualifications , or the many seminars he has attended. All these are effective only in as much as they help the leader inspire strong belief and unwavering trust in the follower-ship.

Real leaders will deny themselves certain liberties, decide to go no farther than a certain point, put themselves in check about this and that, and live as though certain things are wrong. They do this because they think more of the follower-ship than they think of their own liberties.
Let the same attitude that Jesus had also be in you; even though He is God deserving to be served, and rightly so, yet for the sake of teaching His followers how to live in service of humanity other than self, He chose to live as a servant, to put not only an information but also a clear picture on their minds and the right feeling in their hearts.

This is the third requirement for leadership; to be vigilant. Vigilant not for ones own self preservation, but vigilant for how ones life influences others behind him. Be conscious of that.
