A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; (I Timothy 3:2 NKJV)
Monogamy moulds true leaders…Leaders must demonstrate capacity to love, a bearing for commitment and be exclusively loyal. A leaders focus must lie on one mark and his heart pulled by a single all encompassing concern. It is difficult if not impossible to achieve the above for a man fighting for the happiness of two, or worse more than two different women with often conflicting needs and expectations. The man is torn between many concerns all equal in value. His loyalty is divided, his commitment distributed and his focus shifting every now and then.
Such a man cannot model Christian leadership to a following. Such a man cannot even grasp and hold a proper picture of what is expected of him as a leader. We are beings influenced by situations around us. Our understanding is considerably coloured by our experiences. It will be difficult for such a leader to understand unconditional love, exclusive loyalty, singularity of focus and dedication to one chosen purpose.
The qualifications for leadership everywhere are proposed for the benefit of the office, with the success of the leader who will occupy it in mind. They are not intended for judging the leader, rather they are meant to qualify the leader for the office. Ignoring these things is despising the office and a manifestation of carelessness for the success of the office.
O LORD COME SOON.
